Sky News’ Rob Harris has revealed that the UK government has advised sporting bodies to cancel or postpone matches scheduled on the same day as Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
Following the passing of Her Majesty, aged 96, on Thursday, the Premier League decided to call off all fixtures over this weekend, including Tottenham’s trip to the Etihad Stadium.
Some reports over the past couple of days have indicated that next weekend’s fixtures could also end up being pushed back to a later date (Richard Buxton).
Leicester Mercury reported on Saturday that there are concerns there may not be adequate resources for policing and security at football matches next weekend, including Spurs’ clash against the Foxes on September 17.
The report stated that the Met Police and government have said the final decision on next weekend’s fixtures will be made by the Premier League.
Harris has now taken to social media to confirm that Queen Elizabeth’s funeral will be held on Monday, September 19.
The journalist revealed that the government had advised sporting bodies to cancel events that are scheduled on the day of the funeral.
Queen Elizabeth's funeral to be held on Monday September 19.
Government advice to sport: "As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral"

I expect the full quota of Premier League fixtures to go ahead next weekend. Given how tight the schedule is due to a winter World Cup, there is hardly any space in the calendar after January to fit in multiple matches for each side.
I think the Premier League will take a cue from the cricket and rugby authorities by honouring Her Majesty’s memory with a minute of silence and a rendition of the national anthem in stadiums up and down the country next weekend.
