Antonio Conte has claimed that the 3-5-2 formation is a good option for the future, but Tottenham must be careful not to lose their identity along the way.
The Spurs boss was keen to point out that he takes things game by game and chooses the best formation for the current situation. Against Brighton, the Italian claimed he opted for a 3-5-2 to give Richarlison a much-needed rest.
Tottenham have predominantly used a 3-4-3 formation since Conte arrived in North London, with a midfield two of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur, and a front three of Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, and Dejan Kulusevski.
However, against the Seagulls, Conte put Kane and Son up front together and introduced new signing Yves Bissouma into the engine room to great effect. Spurs were able to press higher and have greater control of the ball at the Amex.
Asked about his formation switch today, Conte said (Football London): “We try to use the best formation but at the same time don’t lose our identity. This is very important. If you do something is going to change on the pitch.
“It can be for me a good option in the future. We’ll see. We go game by game. When you play games every two to three days it’s important. At Brighton It was important to give Richy a bit of rest.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I agree that Conte should be trying to train the lads to a point where he can switch seamlessly between 3-4-3 and 3-5-2, either at the start of games or even mid-game. Spurs have great options in the squad now to adapt to different situations.
