Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris has pinpointed what his side need to work on if they are to become a top team in light of last night’s Champions League win over Frankfurt.
A tense night in North London saw Spurs secure a 3-2 win against the Bundesliga side, but it could and should have been far more straightforward than it ended up being.
Spurs came from behind to lead 3-1 at halftime, and when Frankfurt had defender Tuta sent off on the hour mark, it looked like plain sailing for the home side from there on out.
A late goal from Faride Alidou left the game on a knife edge going into injury time, but Tottenham managed to see it out and even had time for Harry Kane to miss a penalty. The Lilywhites are now top of Group D going into the final two games of the group stage.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Hugo Lloris says the way Spurs lost control of the game last night is indicative of the work that needs to be done at the club to challenge at the very top.
He said: “Maybe we thought the game was over. But at this level, there is no easy game, even against ten men. You have to be more focused and avoid this type of ending. But we’re happy with the three points.
“We should have been more able to control the game in the second half. At some point, we started to do a little bit less effort. Obviously, there were a lot of changes, but it’s part of the game and a good opportunity for the players who came on.
“We work so hard every day that you can understand that we can be frustrated after a game like this, because we should have managed the game better.
“But I’m happy with the three points, that’s the most important thing and we had a great reaction after [conceding],” Lloris continued.
Looking ahead, Lloris highlights the need to manage the game more effectively if Spurs are to achieve their ambitions: “It’s just this feeling with ups and downs. When you want to be a top team you have to be able to control games like this one better.”
“We want to get the points and be in a good position before the World Cup, in the Premier League and every competition in which we’re involved.
“But we know that to arrive at this level we need to perform well. We’re capable of performing well, but we’re still looking for improvement,” he concluded.
Spurs Web Opinion
This inability to control a game and tendency to fall apart from winning positions is becoming rarer and rarer, but these mistakes are still creeping in every now and again and are going to cost us dearly if we’re not careful.
Game management is a crucial part of becoming a successful side, and perhaps this Spurs team are still a little naive at times. I’m sure that will be worked on extensively by Antonio Conte though and we’ll see an improvement moving forward.
