Antonio Conte has praised Yves Bissouma for his performance against Everton, admitting that the midfielder is now starting to understand what is expected of him at Tottenham.
Many Spurs fans and neutrals have understandably been surprised with Bissouma’s lack of game time this season since his summer switch.
Antonio Conte remarked last month that the Mali international was struggling to adapt to the tactical aspect of Tottenham’s system (Football London).
However, over the last couple of weeks, the midfielder has shown his quality, with Conte using him alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur in a three-man midfield.
Bissouma replaced Richarlison in the 58th minute of the clash against Everton and his introduction made a big impact on the game, with the home side controlling proceedings and running out comfortable 2-0 winners.
Conte admitted after the game that he has been pleased with the progress that the former Brighton man has made.
The Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “Bissouma played a really good game. I think that when we go to play with a midfield three, for him it’s in this moment it’s better to have two midfielders with him. His impact was really, really positive.
“I think it’s his understanding that he’s in a top club and the pressure is different and the level of the intensity of the training sessions are more higher so the focus has to be every, every moment at the top.
“The demands are a lot and he’s understanding this. We’re talking about a really good player and he played really well and I’m happy for this.”
In contrast to Bissouma, Perisic had had plenty of minutes this season since arriving in the summer but Conte had stated a few days ago that the Croat is still not at his sharpest owing to an injury he picked up in the summer (Sky Italia).
However, the 53-year-old admitted that the wing-back put in the sort of performance that he expects from him against the Toffees.
Conte added: “Ivan Perisic today played in the way that I know him. Also, Ivan for his injury before he struggled a bit to have a good performance. Yes normal performance but my expectation about him are like today, to play like the top.”

The attacking thrust that Perisic and Doherty offered from the two wing-back positions, made us a lot more threatening against Everton. Bissouma is also starting to show his quality, with the midfielder now appearing to be growing in confidence with every match.
