Eric Dier has revealed that the Tottenham players joked that Bryan Gil should have taken the ball from Harry Kane after he won a penalty against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Kane uncharacteristically blasted his penalty over the bar against Frankfurt, thus fluffing the chance to put the result to bed, but it did not matter in the end as Antonio Conte’s men managed to hold on to a 3-2 win.
The pressure was on the Tottenham man when he stepped up to take another spot-kick against his England teammate Jordan Pickford on Saturday but the 29-year-old kept his nerve to find the corner, sending Spurs on their way to a 2-0 win over Everton.
The goal was Kane’s ninth in 10 Premier League matches this season, and Dier suggested that the striker is getting better with each game.
The centre-back told Football.London: “I think he’s getting better and better every game. I think it’s nine goals in ten games. He doesn’t really get too fussed about what’s going on outside of him and keeps performing.”
When asked about the penalty that Kane missed in midweek, Dier joked that Gil should have taken it, given the work he did to win the spot-kick.
The 28-year-old said about the incident: “I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to him (Kane) about it. We told Bryan Gil he should have taken the ball off him!”
That was the second penalty that Kane had missed this season after his effort was saved against Nottingham Forest back in August but Dier suggested that he had no doubts when the striker stepped up against Everton.
He said about the England captain’s prowess from 12 years: “Of course, he’s one of the best penalty takers in the world. The more you take, there’s always a chance he might miss one. But he’s one of the best at it.”

Taking a penalty is not an easy skill, given the pressure involved and we have seen players let the nerves get the better of them, especially if they have missed their previous one.
However, Kane is one of the mentally strong players in the game, and I did not have any doubts that he was going to go to his favourite side and bury the penalty on Saturday.
