Djed Spence has admitted that the tactical side of his game has improved since he arrived at Tottenham during the summer transfer window.
Spence was one of the best players in the Championship during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season and when Tottenham signed him from Middlesbrough in the summer, Spurs fans would have hoped to see the youngster hit the ground running in N17.
However, the 22-year-old has only had a few minutes of action so far this season. The England Under-21 international came on for his home debut in stoppage time of Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday.
Speaking after playing in front of the home fans for the first time, he told Football.London: “I appreciate the warm welcome.
“Obviously my first game here so I really appreciate it and I just can’t wait to get going. It was a good day for the team, a good day for myself, so very happy to get the three points.”
Spence admitted that his learning curve has been quite steep since he made the summer switch to Spurs, stating that he is fully focused on improving his game.
He said regarding his adaptation: “I guess it is just something new for me. I have got to learn but I am working hard to improve, working hard to get in the team and hopefully I can get some run of games soon.”
When asked what Conte and the coaches have been working with him on in training, the former Boro man said: “Just everything. My whole game generally, tactically as well, so everything in general.
“Definitely my tactical side [has improved since arriving]. I am learning a lot from training and learning a lot from the guys, so I am learning a lot at the moment.”
Conte revealed back in July that Spence was a ‘club signing’ rather than a target he had personally identified (The Athletic), but the right-back insisted that those comments did not have a bearing on him.
When asked about the Tottenham head coach’s statement, the youngster responded: “I didn’t really see it. I don’t really pay attention. I just train, you know pay attention to my football and train hard. Let the rest do the rest obviously.”

We will likely see a lot more of Spence in the second half of the season, particularly since he will have an opportunity to have another mini pre-season during the break for the World Cup. It sounds like the 22-year-old has his head screwed on and is focused on impressing Conte and his coaching staff.
