Antonio Conte spoke after Tottenham’s disastrous defeat to Manchester United and reiterated that he doesn’t believe his team should be considered title contenders.
After a strong summer of recruitment and a decent start to the season, many pundits had touted Spurs as potential outsiders for a title challenge this campaign.
Indeed, with 23 points from the first ten games, the North London club were enjoying their best ever start to a Premier League season.
However, all momentum came to a grinding halt with a crushing 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, with Spurs arguably putting in their worst performance of the season.
The Lilywhites were dominated in every area of the pitch, were poor in possession, and never posed a real threat on United’s goal. It’s a defeat which could prove costly as both Manchester City and Arsenal now have a game in hand on Spurs.
Speaking in his post-match press conference though (via Football.London), Spurs boss Antonio Conte insisted his side are not title contenders, regardless of the Manchester United result.
He said: “When the level is high we struggle. We need to work and improve, on and off the pitch. Sometimes I hear we’re a title contender, we need time. In nine to ten months, you can’t go from 9th to the title, especially when you finish 20 points less than leaders.”

It’s interesting Conte specifically mentions going from 9th in the table to winning the title, because that is almost exactly what he achieved in his time at Chelsea – the Blues actually finished 10th the season before Conte won the league with them.
That achievement was astounding though, and there’s no reason to believe it can be replicated here at Spurs, especially this season. Spurs are in a strong position in the table right now, but must improve if they are to even finish in the top four this year, as teams around us step up their game.
