Antonio Conte has hinted that he will continue with a 3-5-2 formation at Tottenham for the time being until he can welcome additional forward options back from injury.
With Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski out injured, Conte was forced to name three in midfield against Manchester United in mid-week, with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son up front as a two.
The Spurs boss admitted in his press conference today that he is worried Kulusevski may not return from injury until after the World Cup, while Richarlison is still out.
Although he was keen to point out that the formation was not to blame for the embarrassing defeat to Man United, Conte appears to be sticking with 3-5-2 out of necessity rather than desire.
The Spurs boss told the press that he will likely name a three-man midfield until Lucas Moura improves his fitness enough to start on the right of a 3-4-3.
He said (Football London): “I don’t think we lose the game for the formation otherwise we won the game against Everton with a 3-5-2.
“If you want to find an excuse I can find a lot but I don’t want to find excuses. The best situation for the team at the moment is to play with the three midfielders and then we’ll see the improvement of Lucas’ fitness.
“We had a lot of problems with the players that now we have to cope with this difficult situation but I don’t want to give excuses to my players. We have to be strong and use this period to become stronger and stronger.
“I want players already to take responsibility when the situation is not easy. In this way, you grow stronger and become a protagonist in the future.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I do think Conte is telling the truth this time. Spurs kind of have to stick with 3-5-2 until they get one of their senior forwards back into starting condition. Bryan Gil clearly isn’t ready to start Premier League games at the moment. I would love to see Oliver Skipp used more though.
