Tottenham Hotspur defender Clement Lenglet has spoken on the club’s performances against the big teams this season and says the squad need to give more on the pitch.
Spurs had their best-ever start to a Premier League campaign, with 23 points from the first 10 matches (BBC). The North London club currently lie in third place in the table.
Defeat at Manchester United on Wednesday night has thrown a spanner in the works now though. The manner of the 2-0 loss also raises questions about Tottenham’s ability to take on the other teams in the ‘Big Six’.
Indeed, Spurs’ two domestic defeats this season have come away from home at Arsenal and Manchester United, while the Lilywhites also struggled to a 2-2 draw away at Chelsea.
Speaking after the game on Wednesday (via Jonathan Veal), Spurs boss Antonio Conte admitted that his side do struggle when they have a ‘high-level game’ and that he and his squad will ‘continue to work’ to improve this (via Alasdair Gold).
Now, Spurs defender Clement Lenglet has commented on this issue in an interview with Sky Sports’ Football Daily.
Lenglet said: “It’s clear for the moment, we’ve lost three games against three big teams. This is where we have to improve. When we play these types of games we have to increase the intensity maybe, the quality on the pitch.
“But it’s easy to talk now because I’m not on the pitch. When you are on the pitch, you have to give more because it’s clear it’s not enough to win for the moment, what we are doing against these type of teams.
“We have to work in this way to improve and be more competitive in the next game against a big team.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s always going to be a struggle coming up against the top teams, especially away from home, but there is a worrying pattern of Spurs players going missing in the big games.
I know Antonio Conte has worked on improving the mentality of the team, but there’s still a long way to go if we want to see better performances than the one against Manchester United.
The players have to go in without fear and believe they can win, otherwise, we will not challenge for top honours in the way we hope.
