Tottenham Hotspur lost their unbeaten home run this evening against Newcastle United with a 2-1 defeat.
Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:
Hugo Lloris – 4 – If Wednesday at United was Hugo at his best then today was the other end of the scale. Unlucky not to get a foul for Newcastle’s opener but also should have just put his boot through it. Should have also done better with the second goal and his kicking was poor.
Ryan Sessegnon – 6 – Always gives you all the energy in the world down the left but Sess didn’t do enough with the positions he got into today. His crossing didn’t hit the mark.
Clement Lenglet – 4 – Really struggled defensively today. Got caught with passes in behind time and time again. Also got beat like he wasn’t there for Newcastle’s second goal.
Eric Dier – 5 – Hasn’t been his normal confident and reliable self over the past three games. A few unforced errors at the back today, including misplacing a pass back to Lloris that gave away a corner.
Davinson Sanchez – 5 – Always puts in a decent defensive display but just lacks that quality on the ball under pressure. Gave it away too much or just clipped it down the line rather aimlessly.
Emerson Royal – 6 – Actually one of his better performances going forward but he was still wasteful in good areas of the pitch, including when he went through on goal. Decent defensively today as most issues came down Tottenham’s left.
Rodrigo Bentancur – 6 – Always gives you 100% effort and pressing galore, but seems to lack his composure towards the final third when playing in a three at times. Gave the ball away in bad areas a few times.
Yves Bissouma – 7 – His best game in a Tottenham shirt, for me. So much more relaxed on the ball in that pivot and battled all day long. Much sharper in his passing too.
Oliver Skipp – 7 – Probably edges the Spurs MOTM for me. Took to the midfield three role like a duck to water with his tough-tackling and lung-busting runs in behind. Was an asset at the back and a threat down the right all day.
Harry Kane – 7 – A frustrating one for him. When he holds the ball up or drops deep to play others into the game, he does it so effortlessly. He must be crying out for a creative player who can do the same for him. Another goal today and a good performance.
Heung-min Son – 5 – The timing of the runs and the general performance is there, but Son lacked confidence in front of goal today. Should have had a couple, including that golden chance at 0-0 where he just seemed to freeze.
Substitutes:
Ivan Perisic – 5 – Came on to replace Sess but offered very little 1v1. Had a good chance that he swept into the arms of Pope.
Lucas Moura – 6 – Was a real livewire after coming on and made stuff happen down the right.
Matt Doherty – N/A
Ben Davies – N/A
