Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal could go head to head for the signature of Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita when his contract expires next summer.
Keita signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2018 for a reported fee of £48 million (BBC Sport). His time at the club has been blighted by a series of injuries though, with the Guinea international making 117 appearances in the last four years (Transfermarkt).
The 27-year-old hasn’t played for Liverpool since coming on as a substitute in the Community Shield this summer (Transfermarkt).
Keita is currently struggling with a hamstring injury, and was omitted from Liverpool’s Champions League squad as a result. Manager Jurgen Klopp suggested Keita will return to action at some point this month (Liverpool Echo).
Due to his injury record and competition for places, it is unclear whether Liverpool will look to extend Keita’s contract beyond next summer. With this in mind, under the Bosman ruling, Keita could sign a pre-agreement deal with clubs outside of England in January.
According to 90min, clubs in the Premier League are keeping tabs on Keita too with a view to making a move. Both Arsenal and Tottenham are keen, and London rivals Chelsea are also reported to be in the mix.
English clubs wouldn’t be able to make an approach for Keita until May, as per Bosman regulations. They may, however, be able to convince Liverpool to sell the player for a reduced fee in the January transfer window.
There is bound to be interest from abroad if Keita does decide to leave Anfield, so he will not be short of options if and when the time comes.
Spurs Web Opinion
There’s no doubt Keita is a good player, but his injury record would make him a big risk to sign for any club. With our midfield already boasting the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Yves Bissouma, and Oliver Skipp, I can’t see Keita being worth signing personally.
