Tim Sherwood has claimed that he would not let Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte spend any more money on transfers until he commits to a new contract at the club.
Since arriving in November 2021, Conte has been given a fair amount of backing by the club’s board when it comes to transfers. He brought in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur in January, and added seven more players to the squad in the summer.
While the £150 million war chest may not have been utilised completely in the summer as initially hoped (Alasdair Gold), the signing of Richarlison for a reported £60 million (Sky Sports) has certainly indicated that Conte will be given funds to operate with.
As we approach November, the shadow of the January transfer window already looms large, and Spurs are expected to make moves to further bolster the squad.
For Tim Sherwood though, Spurs should be cautious in allowing Conte to sign more players. That is, until the Italian signs a new contract with the club, with his current deal ending next summer.
Speaking to Premier League Productions (24/10/22 at 2:15 pm), Sherwood said: “I believe Antonio Conte has got the passion, drive and commitment that the club needed. But I do think they need to sort out his contract issue.
“He’s talking about that it’s the project. We need patience, we need time and we need money. All of this is not good noise coming out of there. The reason it’s not good noise is because he only has a contract until the end of the season.
Sherwood explained: “If you want to go through with the project, then you need to extend your contract. Then perhaps Kane and Son will commit their futures to the club.
“If I am the owner, at the moment, then I am not letting him spend any more money until he commits himself to the club. You could end up buying players for another manager who comes in with different ideas, so it’s a crossroad period for Tottenham.”

We’re in a bit of a catch-22 situation here, because it’s quite obvious that Conte won’t sign a new deal unless he is given the financial backing to improve his squad.
However, I do get where Sherwood is coming from in that we have to be wary of further investment if Conte is likely to leave in the summer.
Regardless, the squad needs to be improved, that’s the top and bottom of it. January will be a crucial transfer window if Spurs are to keep up the pace and secure a top-four finish again this year.
