Les Ferdinand has claimed that Tottenham fans might not be willing to put up with Antonio Conte’s style of play too much longer, given the kind of traditions the club has.
Tottenham came under criticism for their style of play even when they were picking up consistent results earlier in the season but now that they have fallen to back-to-back defeats in the Premier League that criticism has only increased (talkSPORT).
Following Spurs’ 2-1 loss against Newcastle United on Sunday, Conte expressed his frustration on not being able to field his best team due to injuries (Football.London).
He also remarked that Tottenham have only just started on the project of building a strong squad and it is going to take time for the club to compete for major honours.
Ferdinand insisted that he sympathises with Conte for Spurs’ injury woes and stated the Italian has always been clear that he needs time to take the Lilywhites to the level he wants to.
When asked about the Tottenham boss’ comments, the 55-year-old told Sky Sports Football (23/10/22 at 7:05 pm): “I understand where he is coming from.
“He’s had four of his mainstay players out of the team. Players that, if they were fit, would have played against Newcastle and would have made a difference, so I understand his frustration there.
“Then, like he said, if people aren’t listening to what he’s saying, in terms of the journey that they are on, it’s going to take time. They are building. They have started the season really well.
“Like we said, because the opposition across the road in north London is doing so well, then it highlights it when you don’t win a game here.”
“I think he has done it all along and saying: ‘How much are you committed to this process? I am telling you where I think I can take you, but I need the players to take us there. We haven’t got enough of those players in the building, at the moment, so if you give me the players, then I will sign a new contract. Hopefully, Harry Kane is going to sign a new deal and let’s go on this journey. But if you are not, then it’s time for me to move on.’
However, Ferdinand suggested that the pressure on Conte to deliver attractive football will not go away, even if he delivers trophies at Tottenham.
The former Spurs striker added: “He won’t be able to do what he wants to do – the supporters have always wanted a style of play here. Mourinho was here and walked out winning nothing.
“There could be at a stage where Conte does win something, then after that, they will be saying ‘we want to see this attractive football we are used to seeing here at Spurs’ and that could cause a problem.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I do not think our football has been as bad as it has been made out this season. There were a couple of games like the Man Utd and Chelsea clashes where we were extremely poor but apart from that, we have tended to create chances even though we do not have a lot of the ball. However, as with Mourinho, fans are always going to have less patience with this type of football once results start suffering.
