Marcus Edwards silenced the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening when he gave Sporting CP a deserved lead in their Champions League Group D clash against Spurs.
It was a special moment for the 23-year-old who picked up the ball and drove past the unconvincing Spurs defence to fire the ball beyond Hugo Lloris into the bottom corner of his net.
Edwards had caused the north Londoners plenty of problems in the return match in Portugal with Spurs struggling to deal with the pace and dribbling ability of the Enfield-born midfielder.
He joined the Tottenham Hotspur academy setup at the age of eight and was considered to be one of the most naturally talented players to come through the system, however, he left the club in 2019 having only made one senior appearance (Evening Standard), which came in the form of a 15-minute cameo in an EFL Cup game against Gillingham in September 2016, on as a sub in place of Vincent Janssen.
Edwards admitted after the 1-1 draw on Wednesday that it was not his plan to celebrate if he scored against his former side, but revealed that his emotions took over.
Tottenham now have to go to Marseille on Tuesday night looking to avoid defeat to ensure they control their own destiny of securing a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
He told BT Sport: “It’s crazy for me, it’s just crazy that all my family and friends are here supporting me, I wasn’t going to celebrate but I was just too happy, it took me a long time to get here so I just couldn’t help myself.”

Credit has to go to Edwards for having the courage and desire to move abroad to rebuild his reputation, having seen the media question his attitude in the past (Football.London) and is now proving that he can be a top player.
Spurs struggled with the threat he posed, especially in the first half and no fan can blame him for celebrating, especially given the nature of how his career ended at the club.
