South American football expert Tim Vickery has said that he is not convinced Cristian Romero is a world-class centre-back.
Romero’s rise over the last two years has been quite dramatic, with the centre-back being voted the Serie A defender of the year in 2020-21 before quickly establishing himself as a mainstay in the Tottenham defence after arriving at the North London club last summer.
Jamie Carragher even named the 24-year-old as his signing of the season on the back of his first campaign in the Premier League (Sky Sports MNF).
It did not come as a surprise when Tottenham activated the £46.5m option to buy the Argentine permanently last month, and Spurs fans will be hoping that the best is yet to come from the centre-back.
Romero’s absence has certainly been felt by Antonio Conte’s men when the centre-back has missed matches through injury, not only due to the aggressive nature of his defending but also his ability to play out from the back.
However, Vickery has said that he still has some doubts about the Tottenham man, remarking that he could be a liability for Argentina at the World Cup.
He told GiveMeSport: “This is the aspect of the Argentina World Cup challenge that interests me most and their defensive record in recent times is brilliant, especially since Martinez and Romero came into the side. I think it’s something like two goals conceded in 14 games.
“Sometimes they’ve been at full stretch, and I’m really interested to see how they cope with the really difficult games, how that defensive unit copes with the really difficult games, because, as far as I’m concerned, in terms of a genuinely world-class centre back, I still have one or two question marks over Romero.”

There is no doubt about Romero’s quality but there is an argument to be made that he is more suited to a back three than a back four.
The 24-year-old would have to tame his tendency to win the ball aggressively if he is playing as one of two centre-backs and perhaps be a bit more conservative.
That could be an issue for Argentina in the World Cup as Martinez also plays with the same sort of aggression as the Tottenham man.
