Journalist Dean Jones claims that as soon as Djed Spence signed for Tottenham in the summer, he was sure the North London club would loan the youngster out in January.
Spence has only had a few minutes of action this season, coming on as a late substitute in the matches against Nottingham Forest, Everton and Manchester United (Transfermarkt).
The 22-year-old has shown some glimpses of his talent during those cameos and his lack of game time has frustrated some Tottenham fans, particularly given that Emerson Royal continues to struggle going forward.
Spence told Football.London two weeks ago that he is hopeful of getting more game time in the future and is ready to take the opportunities when they come his way.
The former Middlesbrough man also remarked that he has improved tactically since arriving at Tottenham and is focused on continuing to get better.
The Times reported last week that Spence is likely to be loaned out by Tottenham in January, and Jones has now backed up that claim, insisting that the youngster has a long way to go to break into Conte’s starting eleven.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I’ve said since the day he arrived that Spence would probably be loaned out in January.
“It was always going to be a long path getting into this team, particularly under Conte, who’s got a bit of a different development plan to other players that were brought in this summer.”
Spurs Web Opinion
As fans, we cannot really have an informed opinion on whether Spence is deserving of more game time as we do not watch the players train. However, I find it hard to believe that the 22-year-old would be less effective than Emerson Royal at right wing-back.
