Harry Kane insists that he is entirely focused on the task at hand with Tottenham Hotspur right now and is trying not to think too much about the upcoming World Cup.
Qatar is set to host the World Cup this winter, in a change from the usual summer scheduling of the tournament. The first game of the World Cup kicks off on November 20, and the normal domestic season in England will take a break before returning on Boxing Day.
It’s an unprecedented interruption to the season, and one which is likely to cause disruption to many players and teams both before and after the tournament.
Spurs now have just three games left before players prepare to go on international duty. The Lilywhites face Liverpool this Sunday in the Premier League, before travelling to Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on November 9.
They will then host Leeds United in the league on November 12 as the final game before the break.
With the major tournament just around the corner, it would be easy for some players to start thinking about their place on the world stage, but not Harry Kane.
Speaking after Spurs’ huge win in Marseille on Tuesday night, Kane claimed (via Football.London) he is not letting himself get distracted by the World Cup.
He said: “It was really important just before the World Cup. If we’d have gone out, it would have been a real sting because you know you’re coming back from the World Cup and playing Europa League and it’s just not the same feeling.
“So that was really vital. We’ve got three games before the World Cup and hopefully we can use tonight to finish strongly and if we can be there or thereabouts in the Premier League and get through in the Carabao Cup, it’ll be a really good start to the season.
The England captain is well aware of the immediacy of the tournament, saying “I said it before, you try not to think about it.
“I said the World Cup was going to come round really quickly, and it’s come round really quickly. We’re in November already and in a couple of weeks we’ll be on the plane and playing the first game in no time.”
But, if you were worried that Kane might take his eye off the ball at Spurs in the run-up to the World Cup, fear not. He said: “I think a lot of players have got it in the backs of their minds but I think the top, top players manage to give 110% no matter what. The more you try to think about managing yourself, it sometimes backfires.”
Ever the professional, Kane added: “So me personally I’m just trying to focus on the next three games. Of course, it’s hard not to think about it but if we can have three good results it will put us in a really good place going into the World Cup.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Players and managers always say they’re not thinking ahead and only focused on the next match, but you genuinely believe that from Harry Kane. He’s the epitome of a top-class professional, and you just know that he will give everything to these last three games, before hopefully going on to perform well for England at the World Cup.
