The Daily Mail report that the Argentinean FA have asked Premier League clubs to leave their players out of the final round of matches before the World Cup.
Lionel Scaloni’s side reportedly want their players to miss the Premier League fixtures on November 12-13 to begin their World Cup preparations early. Spurs face Leeds United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on November 12 in their final game before the mid-season break.
Apart from Cristian Romero at Spurs, there are five other Argentine internationals in the Premier League, namely Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho at Manchester United, Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa, and Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton.
The Mail reveal that one English club have been asked by the Argentinean FA to release a player early for the World Cup, and that the club have dismissed the request out of hand.
The report adds that any further requests by Argentina will be met with ‘firm resistance’ by Premier League clubs. It is explained that according to FIFA rules, clubs do not have to release their players until Monday, November 14.
Spurs Web Opinion
Premier League clubs are absolutely justified in rejecting this request out of hand, and I certainly do not see Spurs releasing Romero early, given how important the 24-year-old is to us. I do not understand how Argentina can expect special treatment when all the other national teams will only have players join the squad after November 14.
