Tottenham Hotspur continued their poor run of form with defeat at Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup last night, and manager Antonio Conte has spoken after the game of the situation his club find themselves in at the moment.
The inconsistency at Spurs was confounded last night as the North London club fell to a miserable 2-0 loss at the City Ground, just days after they were beaten by Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the weekend.
These results do, however, come off the back of two brilliant wins away from home, in the Premier League against Bournemouth and in the Champions League against Marseille.
Regardless of winning or losing though, there is a more concerning pattern emerging at Tottenham of late. The game against Nottingham Forest was the eighth time in a row the team hasn’t scored in the first half and it’s now five domestic games in a row they’ve been 2-0 down.
Speaking to Football.London after the game, Antonio Conte addressed this less-than-desirable record. He said: “We know, we see the situation, and in the last period many times, maybe seven games we were 1-0 down and in some games 2-0 down. I think that can happen.
“In this moment, we have to find positive things because if you go to negative things, I think on one side it is okay in the right moment, but this is not the right moment because the period is really, really tough and they are losing a lot of physical and mental energy.
“They are losing a lot of things to be stronger with my players.
“I prefer to analyse negative and positive situations, but I think it’s better to underline the positive things in this moment. Now our target is to recover well, be focused on Saturday and show to be strong.
Ahead of the Leeds game, Conte played up the importance of the fans: “Our fans have to play a really good part in the game.
“They have to push us from the start until the end because if we get a win and three points it means that we finish a really tough period with an important qualification in the Champions League and a good position in the table.”

It does feel as though this Leeds game now is a really big moment for Spurs. If the players can eradicate this horrible pattern of first-half performances we’ve been seeing and get a positive result, we can go into the World Cup break fairly happy with where we are. Lose, though, and serious questions will have to be asked.
