Mason Mount has admitted that he used to look up to Luka Modric when he was at Tottenham Hotspur.
Modric will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest midfielders of the modern era, with the Croat being instrumental to the five Champions League titles and three La Liga titles that Real Madrid have won during the decade that he has spent at the Santiago Bernabeu.
It was at Tottenham that the midfielder first made his name after arriving at White Hart Lane as a highly-rated youngster from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2008.
Over the next four years, Modric became the heartbeat of Harry Redknapp’s Spurs side and evolved into one of the best players in the Premier League.
Mount admitted that he idolised the former Tottenham man when he was coming through the academy ranks at Chelsea and spoke about facing off against Modric in the Champions League last season.
The England star told Sky Sports: “I always used to watch Modric when he was in the Premier League. Then obviously, I was playing against him. I got his shirt after the game [last season’s Champions League quarter-final].”

Modric was the main reason that Redknapp’s Spurs used to be able to control games no matter the quality of opposition we came up against.
There was certainly a dramatic drop-off, in terms of our possession and approach play, when the Croat left ahead of AVB’s first season in charge, and the Portuguese coach’s tactics were unfairly blamed for it.
