Alasdair Gold has revealed he would be surprised if Tottenham re-sign Marcus Edwards in January, with the journalist claiming that the winger is not a ‘Conte player’.
Edwards has taken his game up a notch since his switch to Sporting Lisbon in January, with the winger having scored seven goals and provided six assists across all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign so far (Transfermarkt).
Spurs saw first-hand what the 23-year-old is capable of in their two Champions League clashes against the Portuguese side this season, with the silky wide-man converting with a long-range strike during the 1-1 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month.
Portuguese publication Record reported earlier this month that Spurs want to bring Edwards back to the club and were preparing an offer for him ahead of the January transfer window.
Gold has explained that while the move might make sense due to the player being homegrown and Tottenham’s sell-on clause, he suggested that the winger’s reputation of not working hard in training will not sit well with Conte.
Speaking about the speculation linking Edwards with a return to Spurs, the journalist said on his YouTube channel: “At this point in time I would be surprised.
“It would make some sense because of homegrown numbers and he’d be cheaper because Spurs have a sell-on clause with him. He would be cheaper than his value would normally be, but I don’t know if he’s a Conte player.
“Listening to his manager at Sporting speaking about what he’s like and that he has to give his all in training, he’s improved hugely and is more professional, but even his manager, Ruben Amorim, is saying he needs to treat training like they’re matches.
“If you can’t do that at Sporting, Conte will not accept that. I don’t know if that feels like the right move. I wouldn’t rule it out, but it feels unlikely compared to other potential deals out there.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The one thing that is noticeable since Conte arrived at Spurs is that the club are signing players with the right sort of mentality who are willing to give their all. The Italian clearly values players’ attitude as much as he does their talent.
So, I can see where Gold is coming from concerning Edwards. Spurs will probably do their due diligence on the winger’s personality to find out if he will fit in, and will only make a move if they are convinced that he would.
