Relevo journalist Toni Juanmarti has revealed that Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta is a big fan of Tottenham target Rafael Leao.
Leao has been making waves in the Serie A over the last 18 months and is now one of the most sought-after attacking talents in European football.
The forward, who registered 16 goal contributions for AC Milan in the first part of the season (Transfermarkt), took his club form into the World Cup, finding the back of the net in Portugal’s 3-2 win over Ghana on Thursday.
CM.it reported last month that Spurs are one of the clubs who are monitoring the 23-year-old ahead of the January transfer window, with the report adding that the North London club could face competition from Chelsea and Manchester City for the forward.
Milan are thought to be intent on tying Leao down to a new contract, with the Rossoneri allegedly prepared to make him the highest-paid player in the Serie A (90 min).
CalcioMercato asserted two weeks ago that even if Milan fail to convince the Portugal international to sign a new deal, they would not sell for under €100m (£88m) in January.
Juanmarti has now taken to social media to reveal that Barcelona are also on Leao’s trail, with the journalist stating that Laporte ‘loves’ the Milan star.
Juanmarti added that while Barca’s scouting reports of the forward have been positive, the only issue is that the Lille star does not naturally fit into Xavi Hernandez’s preferred 4-3-3 formation.
Spurs Web Opinion
Leao’s versatility would make him a good fit for Conte’s system but I do not think there is any chance that Spurs will break the bank for a forward in January, given the attacking options that Conte has at his disposal.
While I do expect us to sign a backup winger in January, the bulk of our transfer funds will likely be used to strengthen at right wing-back and centre-back.
