CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that James Maddison would prefer to wait until the end of the season for a transfer rather than leave Leicester City in January.
If there were any doubts regarding Maddison’s readiness to make a step up to a top club, he has dispelled those ideas with the form he has shown this season.
The 25-year-old has 11 goal contributions to his name in 13 games so far (Transfermarkt), which is particularly impressive considering the struggles Leicester went through for the first couple of months of the campaign.
Alasdair Gold revealed to Football.London last week that Tottenham have a ‘long-held interest’ in the Foxes star but suggested that it might take an ‘astronomical bid’ to convince Brendan Rodgers’ side to sell the player in January.
The Northern Echo revealed a few days ago that Newcastle United are also set to enter the race for the Leicester star’s signature, with the Magpies alleged to have made the attacking midfielder their number-one target.
Jacobs has now revealed that Maddison would prefer to wait until the summer before deciding on his next destination so that there is clarity on which clubs are in the Champions League.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Sources told me that Maddison would rather wait until the end of the season and Leicester are not ruling out a new deal either. But from Maddison’s point of view, the reason why he would rather wait is because he wants to know what he’s getting.
“Right now if London’s the preference, and Tottenham and or, more loosely, Chelsea are looking at him, neither of those two clubs can categorically guarantee that they’re heading towards Champions League football for sure next season and Newcastle are in a better form position, but again, who knows whether they’re going to get over the line and get Champions League football.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Despite all the speculation linking Maddison with Spurs, I am not convinced that the 25-year-old would be a top target for Conte or Paratici. He does not fit naturally into the 3-4-3 system, and it sounds quite unlikely that Tottenham would spend £50m-£60m on a bit-part player, who can only be used on the rare occasions that Conte uses a 3-5-2.
