According to a new report from 90Min, the Tottenham Hotspur board are divided on the future of manager Antonio Conte as negotiations over a new contract for the Italian continue.
Conte arrived at Tottenham in November 2021, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo after a disastrous manager search that summer led to an equally disastrous, yet short-lived reign for the Portuguese boss.
It’s fair to say Conte has transformed the club since taking over. He managed to guide Spurs to a top-four finish last season, securing a return to the Champions League for the North London side, and oversaw Tottenham’s best-ever start to a domestic season this campaign (after ten games).
Off the pitch, too, the players are seemingly fitter and more driven than ever. Behind the scenes, the transfer policy has shifted somewhat, too, with a desire to sign more experienced players replacing the old habits of signing talented youngsters with an eye on the future.
Conte’s current contract expires at the end of this season, though, and his future is anything but clear right now. According to The Telegraph, Tottenham have offered Conte a £1 million-a-year pay rise to sign a new deal, but apparently the Italian is in ‘no rush’ to commit.
Now, 90Min understands there is also a level of uncertainty among the Spurs hierarchy and it has been suggested that the board “are not unanimous in their backing of Antonio Conte.” It seems some among the upper management at Spurs “would prefer to go in another direction.”
They are reportedly wary of giving Conte a big contract, for him to then either fail in “delivering a top-four finish or a trophy this term,” or worse still, that the 53-year-old will simply walk away even if success does come.

This whole situation is getting a little bit messy now and really needs resolving as we head into the January transfer window. There will be a lot of talk until that new contract is signed, but I think the board need to get it resolved, give Conte what he wants and needs, and push the club to succeed under his leadership.
