Sao Paulo director Carlos Belmonte has admitted that multiple Premier League clubs have enquired about the availability of Pablo Maia, who is rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar.
Maia is quickly establishing a reputation as one of the best emerging talents in Brazilian football, with the youngster impressing with his consistency and versatility since breaking into Sao Paulo’s starting eleven last season.
Despite being just 20 years of age, he has already demonstrated plenty of tactical maturity by putting in solid displays in central defence, in defensive midfield, and as a box-to-box midfielder.
90 min reported earlier this month that Maia had caught the attention of several Premier League clubs including Spurs ahead of the January transfer window.
The report claimed that Tottenham and West Ham were monitoring the youngster’s development while Fulham’s offer for the player had been turned down.
Belmonte has now admitted that Sao Paulo are fielding regular requests from English clubs regarding Maia.
He told the Brazilian publication Terra: “I’m not afraid to say that Pablo Maia is the most coveted player in our squad right now. For Pablo Maia, we have polls almost daily. Mainly from English football.
“English clubs understand that he (would) adapt very well to the English game. He is a very valuable player today. And I can assure you that we have already turned down important offers for Pablo Maia.”

We rarely see Brazilian youngsters directly making the jump from South American football to the Premier League. They usually tend to land first in the Portuguese, French or Italian leagues as those routes offer an easier transition to European football. However, there have been exceptions like Gabriel Jesus and Sandro. It remains to be seen if Maia will follow a similar route.
