According to Goal‘s annual rankings in the Goal50 award, two Tottenham Hotspur players have made the cut but it may surprise some to see Heung-min Son above Harry Kane on the list.
It’s no surprise to see the pair among the top 50 in the award, of course. When it comes to Tottenham Hotspur, both Kane and Son are undoubtedly the biggest stars and the most important players in the squad, as well as being two of the most prolific players in all of Europe.
For Son, the second half of last season was particularly fruitful. In a season which saw him bag 23 goals in the Premier League (Transfermarkt) and share the Golden Boot award with Mo Salah, Son arguably outdid his strike partner for once.
This season has been less productive for the South Korean, though. Son has struggled for form and has just five goals in all competitions so far this term (Transfermarkt).
As for Kane, it’s been a brilliant calendar year. He scored 16 goals in the second half of the 2021/22 season and provided eight assists across all competitions (Transfermarkt), helping Spurs achieve a top-four finish.
This term, Kane has gone from strength to strength, and already has 13 goals and three assists to his name before the international break (Transfermarkt).
Kane also bagged three goals at the 2022 World Cup (Transfermarkt) and became England’s joint all-time top goalscorer in the process (FourFourTwo).
Regardless, Son comes in at number 13 in Goal’s ranking, while Kane sits just behind him in 14th. It’s worth noting too, that this ranking is decided by fan votes, so Son’s huge popularity in South Korea may have helped swing the vote in his favour.
Spurs Web Opinion
It doesn’t really matter who is ranked higher, it’s just great to see both of these Spurs players make the list and rank so highly. It’s been a fantastic year for the pair of them and they can be very proud of what they have achieved with Spurs, and hopefully 2023 can be even bigger.
