Tottenham Hotspur duo Cristian Romero and Hugo Lloris faced off against one another in last month’s World Cup final, and the former has been speaking to the club website about the conversations the pair shared about the game.
For Romero, the 2022 World Cup final was the culmination of a rapid rise to prominence over the last couple of years.
Having only made his international debut in June 2021, and with just 19 caps to his name for Argentina (Transfermarkt), Romero has already won the Copa America and now the World Cup with his country.
Romero was undoubtedly the big winner among the Spurs squad at the World Cup. With 11 first-team players making the trip to Qatar, only two could make the final.
The other player, club captain and number one goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, knows all about winning the World Cup, having lifted the trophy in 2018 with France.
It wasn’t to be this time for Lloris, but the Frenchman and Romero didn’t let national rivalry get in the way of the friendship they have established at club level. Romero explained how the two interacted before and after the game.
He said: “We sent some text messages before. When they were going to play against England, I spoke to Hugo and wished him luck. He is always a great person and since the first day I arrived here in Tottenham, he has always helped me.
“We also know that each one gives his best for his national team. After the game, yes, obviously we talked a bit, then I left with my team and he went with his.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Cristian Romero has achieved incredible things with Argentina already, and while Lloris will obviously have been disappointed not to end his France career with another World Cup win, I’m sure he was happy for his club teammate.
