The print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (25/01/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) has suggested that Tottenham have not yet given up on their pursuit of Nicolo Zaniolo.

Spurs announced their first signing of the January transfer window yesterday, confirming that Arnaut Danjuma had joined on loan from Villarreal until the end of the season.

Most Tottenham fans would have assumed that the acquisition of the Dutchman would spell an end to the club’s pursuit of Zaniolo, but that is not the case if Gazzetta‘s latest update is to be believed.

The publication claims that the negotiations between Roma and Tottenham for the 23-year-old are still stuck in a deadlock, with the North London club only wanting a loan move for the winger to become mandatory if they qualify for the Champions League. 

However, it is said that the Lilywhites are still locked in a ‘two-horse race’ for Zaniolo, with Newcastle United now thought to have entered the picture.

The report states AC Milan have not offered enough to snap up the Italy international and adds that there is the possibility of the attacker remaining at the Stadio Olimpico until the end of the season and leaving on a cheaper fee in the summer window.

However, reports since have revealed that Zaniolo prefers a move to AC Milan and Bournemouth have now entered the race with a bid. Fabrizio Romano makes no mention of Tottenham though, so it is unclear whether Gazzetta’s claim is wide of the mark.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think there is any chance of Spurs signing Zaniolo, now that Danjuma has arrived through the door. Even if the club were to offload both Lucas Moura and Bryan Gil, signing Zaniolo would leave us with too many non-homegrown players for the Champions League squad, given that Pedro Porro is also expected to arrive through the door.
