The Athletic revealed that Tottenham chose against signing Leandro Trossard as the club did not think the Brighton star would have much resale value.

Arsenal snapped up Trossard in a deal worth £27m after the attacker had a falling out with Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi (Sky Sports).

However, in the week before the winger made a switch to the Emirates Stadium, he was heavily linked with a move to Spurs (Football Insider).

Charlie Haffenden later reported on 19 January that Tottenham had only submitted an offer of £12m for Trossard, which was ‘laughed off’ by the Seagulls.

The Athletic have now explained that the Belgian international’s name was fairly high up on Lilywhites’ list of attacking reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window.

The report states that Trossard matched the profile of attacker that Antonio Conte’s men were looking for and offered the additional benefit of being able to operate as a wing-back.

However, it is revealed that Spurs felt the 28-year-old lacked any resale value which is why they were not willing to go near the fee that Brighton were demanding for the player.

Spurs Web Opinion

If re-sale value is the main reason that Tottenham did not go through with the move, that is not a good look for the club’s hierarchy. 

However, we do not know how high up the 28-year-old was on Conte’s wishlist. The fact that the speculation only emerged after his falling out with De Zerbi, suggests Spurs probably viewed it as an opportunistic deal more than anything.
