Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has been speaking to Sky Sports (via Football Daily) about the moment he told Harry Kane he would be starting a Premier League game for the first time.
Kane made his first appearance for Spurs way back in August 2011, in a Europa League qualifier against Hearts. Harry Redknapp was the manager at the time.
Almost exactly a year later, Kane would make his Premier League debut, coming on as a substitute against Newcastle in the 86th minute. The striker then had two loan spells, with Norwich and Leicester, before finally getting his chance at Spurs.
It wasn’t until April 2014 that Kane would start a Premier League game for the first time. Sunderland were the visitors to White Hart Lane, and Spurs came away 5-1 winners on the day with Kane bagging a goal.
The manager on that day, Tim Sherwood, has been reflecting on the conversation he had with Kane prior to the match.
He said: “I remember the day I told him. I said ‘Look Harry, you’re going to play tomorrow.’ And he looked at me as if to say, ‘Yeah, that’s about time. I knew he wasn’t going to be fazed.’
“But I took a lot of questions from inside the club about why he was playing instead of Soldado or Adebayor. People were worried about the valuation of players who weren’t going to play.”
But that didn’t come into Sherwood’s thinking: “All I was interested in was winning the football match, and he was the best equipped to achieve that. Harry’s greatest attribute is between his ears; his drive and determination to be the best.
“He’s still got that. He wants to improve all the time. He never feels like there’s a ceiling up there, he will just continue to get better and better.”

Spurs Web Opinion
It’s crazy to think that it took so long for Kane to make his full Premier League debut after first coming through at Spurs. He hasn’t looked back since though, and what a career it has been so far.
