Amidst the reports linking James Maddison with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur, Cristian Stellini has admitted that the coaching staff at Spurs are big fans of the Leicester City star.
Maddison has undoubtedly been Leicester’s standout player this season and his importance to the Foxes was underlined by his performance against Aston Villa last week on his return to fitness.
The 26-year-old found the back of the net to take his tally to eight goals (along with four assists) as Brendan Rodgers’ men emerged 4-2 winners from Villa Park.
There has been plenty of speculation over the attacking midfielder’s future over recent months, with Football Insider reporting ahead of the January transfer window that the England international would jump at the chance to join Spurs if the North London club came calling.
Alasdair Gold said in Q&A on Football.London just a couple of days ago that he would be ‘surprised’ if Tottenham are not at least looking at Maddison as an option during the summer window.
Stellini has now confirmed ahead of his side’s trip to the King Power Stadium that Tottenham admire the Foxes midfielder.
The Spurs assistant head coach told Football.London: “We like Maddison like a player.
“He is an important player in this league, a player with an important type of skill, like his delivery, his cross, his right foot is a very important foot so he shoots, he crosses, he takes the set-pieces.
“He is a player you have to take care of. When you play against this player, you have to be careful. When you feel how important is this type of skill, for sure you like this type of player.
“He’s a player with talent. At the moment he’s playing for Leicester, a team we play against. We take care of him like an opponent.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Stellini could have chosen to be a lot more diplomatic in talking about Maddison and the threat he offers. The Italian’s choice of words might have intended to send a message to the 26-year-old about potential summer interest in an attempt to slightly turn his head.
