Mark Schwarzer has claimed that Hugo Lloris’ injury might have a silver lining for the Frenchman as it takes him out of the spotlight and gives him some much-needed rest after a frantic few months.
Reports emerged on Wednesday that Lloris had sustained an injury to his knee ligament during the 1-0 win against Manchester City and is expected to be out of action for six to eight weeks (The Telegraph).
Injury expert Ben Dinnery has told GiveMeSport that while the Tottenham captain will not need surgery, he might not return to action until the start of April.
That means that Fraser Forster will have to take over the gloves at a crucial point in the season, with the knockout stages of the Champions League set to get underway next week and with Spurs trying to get back into the top four.
Schwarzer has said that while no player would want to be out for six to eight weeks, Lloris needed a mental break after the disappointment of the World Cup.
When asked if the 36-year-old’s injury is a blessing in disguise, the former Middlesbrough man told Sky Sports: “In a nutshell, yes.
“He had the disappointment of not winning it, losing in the final and he mentioned something not so long ago about the pressure and the disappointment of losing the final, and how much it has weighed on him.
“He’s come back almost straight away into a Tottenham side and he’s made mistakes. The spotlight is very much on him again.
“There have been question marks about his longevity at the club and whether he is still able to play at this level. All these little things play a part.
“They take a toll on you. To be out for six to eight weeks is not great for any player. It’s not the best situation but for Lloris to be out of the spotlight, now, it may be a good thing. It may give him a chance to let things settle down a bit and to digest the disappointment.”

While one can argue that Lloris needed a mental break, it is also true that the Frenchman was essentially fighting to extend his Spurs career.
He would have wanted to have a strong second half of the season to prove that he is still good enough for the top level but that chance has now been taken away from him.
