Journalist Ben Jacobs has told TeamTalk that Harry Kane’s future may well lie with Tottenham Hotspur, and there are two big reasons why that is the case.

Kane has spent his entire career with Spurs, save for a few loan spells at other clubs in his early playing days, and has gone on to establish himself as a Tottenham legend. The 29-year-old now has 267 goals in 416 games for Spurs (Transfermarkt) and is their all-time leading goalscorer (GOAL).

In a hard-fought 1-0 win over Manchester City last weekend, Kane scored the only goal of the game to spark emotional scenes as he celebrated breaking Jimmy Greaves’ scoring record.

With just under 18 months left on his contract (Transfermarkt), there are some concerns over whether Kane’s long-term future involves staying at Tottenham, or moving on in pursuit of trophies.

Kane has been linked with both Manchester United and Bayern Munich for some time now (Sky Sports), but Jacobs believes the England captain has too much of a connection with Spurs to move on now.

He said: “When you look at Kane, and his love for Tottenham, and having that emotional moment of becoming their all-time record goalscorer in a big win over Manchester City. That game, that moment sums things up because it shows a variety of things.

“It shows that Tottenham can win a big game. That they can ultimately compete, at least across 90 minutes with a team like Manchester City. And crucially that it’s Kane’s goals that are going to make all of the difference.”

Jacobs thinks Kane ultimately wants to stay with Spurs, adding: “He also knows that Tottenham are invested in him, the fan base loves him.

“And ultimately, it’s his club. This all brings sentiment into the decision-making, which is why his starting position, as I understand it, and have done for months, is to try and stay at Spurs.”

There’s more to it than emotion, though, as Jacobs suggests “there has to be a belief from Kane’s perspective in the project.

“He will make the decision with not just his heart, and if it was only his heart, he’d have already signed with Spurs, but the head must come into it as well. The project has to move in the right direction. And luckily for Kane, he can control the project.

“He likes playing under Antonio Conte. But if the manager was to change if the club was to be outside of the Champions League, if the purse strings were to tighten again, then you suddenly start to look at that last period of your peak football career.

“And maybe wonder whether or not it’s worth going elsewhere.”

Just as Antonio Conte’s situation hinges on where we finish this season, so does Kane’s. If we finish in the top four, I see no reason why both wouldn’t sign a new deal and push on with the project. Finish outside the top four, however, and we could have a problem.
