According to a report from the Independent, Brentford goalkeeper David Raya rejected a contract with the club recently and has put any discussion of a renewal on hold, although the player insists he is happy where he is for now.
Raya joined Brentford in the summer of 2019, helping the club gain promotion to the Premier League. The Spanish keeper has been a key figure in the Bees establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the top flight and now has 144 appearances to his name (Transfermarkt).
The 27-year-old’s current contract expires in 2024 (Transfermarkt) and Brentford could well face a challenge to keep hold of him this summer if reports are to be believed.
It is thought Raya is on Tottenham’s radar when it comes to the search for replacements for current number one Hugo Lloris (Daily Mail).
Spanish outlet Revolo previously claimed Raya had rejected a contract at Brentford and suggested the club may look to cash in on the player while they still can.
Now, the latest from the Independent confirms that, as Raya himself confirms he did indeed turn down a contract offer, but insists that is only because he has his sights set firmly on the here and now.
He said: “I don’t think it’s the right time to sign a contract at the moment. I’m really, really happy and right now I’m just thinking about doing the best for the team and trying to push for Europe.
“I was offered a new contract last year and one in January but we didn’t reach an agreement. I would like to see what happens in summer, however, I’m happy at Brentford.”
On the future, Raya added: “For now a new contract is secondary, the most important thing is the team and the games. We’ll see where we are in May. You never know what’s around the corner.
“There’s nothing I can say about what’s going to happen in the summer. I don’t even know what’s going to happen on Saturday.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I’m a big fan of David Raya, and whatever the reason for him rejecting these contract offers at Brentford it can only be good news for us.
If by the summer he still hasn’t signed a new deal, Brentford will reluctantly have to consider an offer, and we can be the ones to offer him a new challenge.
