Fabrizio Romano has told Caught Offside that he has doubts over reports linking Antonio Conte with jobs in Italy, as he doesn’t believe there will be a job available for him at any of the big Serie A clubs in the summer.
Conte has been with Tottenham since November 2021 and his time with the North London side has been full of ups and downs. He took Spurs to the top four last season despite the club being in mid-table when he arrived.
This season has been far more inconsistent, both on and off the pitch. The team has struggled to find form, results have been frustrating, and injuries have plagued the team.
Despite this, Spurs are currently fifth in the league and have a Champions League second-leg tie to play against AC Milan next month.
Off the pitch, speculation has refused to go away surrounding the future of Conte. With his contract ending in the summer, and no new deal agreed thus far, the 53-year-old has consistently been linked with a move back to his native Italy.
Conte has recently been touted as a possible candidate for the top job at AC Milan should they choose to part ways with Stefano Pioli (La Reppublica 07/02/23, as relayed by Milan Live and SportWitness). He has also been strongly linked with a return to Juventus (CalcioMercatoWeb).
However, Romano doesn’t envisage a future where the top jobs in Italy become available this summer, and for this reason, can’t see Conte returning to his homeland.
He said: “We’ve always had rumours and speculation over Antonio Conte almost since he joined Tottenham. Conte loves Serie A and he’s Italian so it’s normal. But at the moment I’m not even sure there are going to be many options.”
“Inter are not in talks with any coach, AC Milan fully trust Pioli at this stage, and Juventus are not in the position to open talks with other managers before they decide on new board and more… so, nothing concrete yet,” he added.
Spurs Web Opinion
I am not so sure. Antonio Conte doesn’t look happy and has had such a difficult year with us, mainly for personal reasons, and I think he will want to be back in Italy if the chance arises. Whether a job is there for him or not, remains to be seen, but if there is it will be tough to keep hold of him.
