Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has told the Leicester Mercury he can do no more to convince reported Tottenham Hotspur target James Maddison to sign a new contract at the club.
Maddison joined the Foxes back in 2018 from Norwich and has gone on to establish himself as one of the most accomplished all-round attacking players in the Premier League now.
The Englishman enjoyed an incredible campaign last year, scoring 18 goals and providing 12 assists in 53 appearances for Leicester across all competitions (Transfermarkt).
It’s been much of the same this year, too, with the 26-year-old registering 14 goal contributions in 18 games this term (Transfermarkt).
Ahead of the January transfer window, it was suggested Maddison could make the move to Spurs (Football Insider) as the club look for a creative midfielder to add to their ranks. The player has also been linked with Newcastle (Northern Echo) and Man City (Manchester Evening News).
The player stayed put in January, but those rumours look set to return in the summer. According to Rodgers’ latest comments, the player may have his sights set on a move in the future and there’s nothing he can do to stop him.
He said: “No, (there’s nothing more Leicester can do to convince him). I think he knows how much he’s loved and the impact he’s had here.
“It’s just going to be about him and where he sees the next steps of his career. That’s nothing against the club or against anyone, he’s probably a player that wants to play at the very highest level and he’s showing he can do that.”
Maddison was captain for Leicester as they trounced Spurs 4-1 on Saturday, and Rodgers added: “He’s a top, top player but in the meantime, we’re not taking anything away from him, he’s very committed. You see him, he led them out, his chest was out and he absolutely loved it, it was right up his street.”

I’ve said it for nigh on two years now, but I would absolutely love for us to sign James Maddison.
I think he’s the perfect fit for our squad and could really help to unlock our transitions between defence and attack.
He’s such a dangerous player who can score and assist in any situation, and we should make him a priority in the summer.
