Stefan de Vrij, who Antonio Conte reportedly wants to bring to Tottenham in the summer, has admitted that he is in talks with the Inter Milan hierarchy over a new contract.
The speculation linking De Vrij with a move to Tottenham has been incessant since Conte first took over at the North London club over a year ago and it has intensified recently since the centre-back is now down to the final six months of his contract at the San Siro (Transfermarkt).
Fichajes claimed back in December that Spurs and Atletico Madrid were leading the race for the Dutchman’s signature.
Football Insider suggested just a couple of days ago that Tottenham were set to turn their full attention to De Vrij after accepting defeat in their efforts to snap up Milan Skriniar, who is on the verge of agreeing to sign for Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent in the summer.
The report asserted that Conte had already spoken to De Vrij regarding a potential summer switch to the Premier League club.
The centre-back has now talked up his chances of agreeing on a new deal with Inter, although he did not make any concrete statement about his future.
The 31-year-old said (via Fabrizio Romano): “We’re in a very good relationship with Inter board. We’re in talks on new contract so let’s see what happens. Spanish clubs want me? My agent said that. I’m now focused on the games and we’ll see”.

If De Vrij does not sign a new contract, I do expect Spurs to vie for his signature (assuming Conte commits his future to the club).
While the Dutchman might not fit the age profile of players that Tottenham usually go for, the club showed with their acquisition of Ivan Perisic last summer that they are prepared to sign players with little to no resale value if Conte feels they are uniquely suited to his system.
