Tottenham Hotspur’s Emerson Royal has been named in the BBC Sport Premier League team of the week by Garth Crooks, with the pundit describing the defender as old-fashioned.
West Ham were the visitors to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium yesterday afternoon for a hotly-contested London derby. It was the home side who came away with all three points, with goals from Emerson Royal and Heung-min Son sealing a 2-0 win for Spurs.

It was a vital win which propelled Spurs back into the top four, leap-frogging Newcastle United. The game also marked a fantastic performance from Royal, who continues to excel at right wing-back of late.
Royal now has two goals in his last five league games (Transfermarkt) and is proving his doubters wrong with a string of impressive displays. The Brazilian looked destined to leave Spurs last month, but is now keeping new signing Pedro Porro out of the starting line up.
On Royal’s inclusion in the team of the week, Crooks said: “He has never been one of my favourite players but Royal made my selection after his performance against Manchester City, having done an excellent marking job on Jack Grealish.
“His game is one you would call gritty and not pretty. He is an old-fashioned enforcer but can play when forced to. Royal also knows how to score a goal too. His effort against West Ham, who looked a team lacking direction, was a striker’s finish and left Lukasz Fabianski grounded.”

I have to hold my hands up and say I was desperate for Emerson Royal to move on in the January transfer window. Just a few weeks ago he looked hopeless, unable to cross a ball and a liability in all areas of the pitch. But, he has improved drastically and now looks like a player we can really depend upon.
