Journalist Dean Jones has said that Tottenham have no concerns regarding Pedro Porro despite the right wing-back’s struggles on his Premier League debut.
After weeks of negotiations with Sporting Lisbon, which had more than its fair share of hiccups, Spurs finally got the Porro deal over the line on transfer deadline day last month.
The Lilywhites paid a £5m loan fee with an obligation to buy at £39m for the Spaniard while also forgoing 15 per cent of Marcus Edwards’ sell-on clause (Sky Sports).
However, the 23-year-old had a debut to forget against Leicester last week as he struggled to cope defensively with Harvey Barnes down the Foxes left as Spurs fell to a 4-1 loss at the King Power Stadium.
Tim Sherwood blasted Porro for his display against Leicester, suggesting that ‘he was all over the place’ and just wanted to ‘play as a winger’ (Sky Sports News – 3:45 pm, February 11, 2023).
Porro missed out on a spot in the starting XI against both AC Milan and West Ham this week, with Emerson Royal scoring and arguably putting in a Man of the Match performance in the latter.
However, Jones insisted that Spurs are confident that their newest addition will come good, adding that they consider him to be one of their most technically gifted players.
When asked about Porro, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “Look, he plays a position that is going to be exploited at any moment that you are not in top, top form and I think that Tottenham have an expectation that he’s going to be good enough.
“They don’t doubt that at all, like, they say that technically, he is among the best players they’ve got in that squad, so they’re not worried about that.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is ridiculous to judge a new signing based on just one performance. In fact, we might not see the best of Porro until next season as the 23-year-old might need time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. So, Spurs fans need to be patient with the Spaniard.
