After filling in at left wing-back against West Ham yesterday, Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies has spoken to Football.London about taking up the position as opposed to playing at centre-back.

Davies arrived at Tottenham from Swansea in 2014, when his primary position was at left back.

The Welshman has since adapted to playing as a left-sided centre-back under Antonio Conte.

Conte’s 3-4-3 system has seen Davies utilise his defensive awareness and ball-playing abilities effectively and the 29-year-old has become a dependable member of the squad now.

However, with Ryan Sessegnon currently out injured and Ivan Perisic requiring a rest, it was down to Davies to revert back to his previous role as a left back.

Davies turned in a performance of the highest order against West Ham, too, providing an assist for the first goal and being named man of the match.

In a chat with Football.London, Davies reflected on the challenges of taking on the left wing-back role.

He said: “When you’re in that position, you’ve got to be defensively-minded but also you’ve got to try to join in the attacks. It’s something I’m happy to do for the team, it was fun.

“I’ve played there a few times, at the end of games under Conte, but I’ve not started there under him.

“It’s something that I’ve picked up the details in training that we’ve done with Conte regularly.

“So it’s not something that I’m worried about doing. It was enjoyable today.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Ben Davies continues to prove himself to be a highly useful member of the Tottenham squad.

His versatility is impressive, and he always seems to put in a solid performance.

Against West Ham, we saw the more attacking side of Davies’ game, and he showed that he still has plenty to offer Antonio Conte’s squad.
