Cristian Stellini has brushed aside suggestions that Emerson Royal’s upturn in form is due to the competition for places following Pedro Porro’s arrival.

When Spurs agreed to pay a loan fee of £5m to Sporting Libson along with an obligation to buy Porro for an additional £39m (Sky Sports), most Tottenham fans would have expected the Spaniard to be thrown straight into the starting eleven.

However, Emerson has deservedly kept the new signing out of the team, with the Brazilian arguably delivering his best performance in a Tottenham shirt in a 1-0 win over Manchester City two weeks ago.

While the 23-year-old showed his defensive solidity against Pep Guardiola’s men, he displayed what he can offer in the final third in the win over West Ham yesterday, proving a constant threat on the right flank and scoring the home side’s opener.

Stellini insisted that the former Real Betis man was showing the same sort of form at the start of the season before he picked up the red card in the North London Derby back in October.

When asked about Emerson’s performances going up a couple of notches since Porro’s arrival, the Spurs assistant first-team coach told Football.London: “I don’t think it is linked with the signing of Pedro Porro but this type of performance from Emerson we had in the start of the season.

“The start of the season was one of the best performances.

“He played very well. After the three-match ban, after Arsenal, maybe he has lost his place but there was the World Cup that interrupted the season and this is a weird season for many teams and many players.

“It is important that the staff work to understand when is the moment to work, when is the moment to perform and when is the moment to recover. So it’s not an easy situation.”

I have to admit that I was as frustrated as anyone at Tottenham’s decision to offload both Spence and Doherty while hanging on to Emerson as I just did not see the Brazilian as a good fit for the wing-back role.

I am delighted that the 23-year-old is now starting to prove me wrong and Conte and his coaching staff deserve credit for continuing to back him.
