Journalist Paul Brown has argued that Emerson Royal deserves respect for the way he has managed to turn things around at Tottenham, given the scathing criticism that the 23-year-old was receiving.
Most Spurs fans and pundits alike had seemingly written off Emerson Royal until a few weeks ago, with the Brazilian even being treated as a laughing stock for his tendency to post his individual highlights on social media after matches.
When the former Real Betis man was jeered off by the home fans while being substituted against Leeds United back in November, it seemed like there was no way back for him at Tottenham.
However, Emerson has arguably been Spurs’ best player in his last two starts against Manchester City and West Ham United, and is deservedly keeping Pedro Porro out of the team despite the Lilywhites breaking the bank for the Spaniard last month.
Brown pointed out that Conte is not an easy coach to please and praised the right-back for proving his worth to the Italian.
When asked about Emerson’s turnaround, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “I think he does deserve some respect.
“It’s taken quite a lot of mental strength to ignore the criticism, work hard and find a way back because Antonio Conte is an incredibly demanding manager and can be pretty ruthless when you’re not doing what he wants.
“He’s binned many a player off over the years and could quite easily have done the same to Emerson Royal, so it’s kind of nice to see him back in the team and doing what he’s been doing.”

Conte clearly thinks very highly of Emerson’s mentality and his attitude, which is perhaps why he seemingly persisted with the Brazilian despite all evidence suggesting that he is not a good fit for the right wing-back role.
Conte and his coaching staff deserve credit for sticking to their guns and hanging on to Emerson ahead of both Djed Spence and Matt Doherty.
