Harry Kane praised Oliver Skipp after Tottenham’s win over Chelsea, revealing that the midfielder has been working hard behind the scenes.

When Tottenham lost both Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma to long-term injuries two weeks ago, some Spurs fans may have feared that the season was in danger of petering out.

However, since their defeat at Leicester, the Lilywhites have looked much more solid defensively, having conceded just one goal in their three matches against Milan, West Ham and Chelsea.

Skipp’s displays have been a huge reason behind the improvement, with the 22-year-old mopping up brilliantly in front of the back line.

Against Chelsea, the youngster not only showcased his defensive tenacity and his discipline but also made an impact at the other end of the pitch, netting his first senior goal for the Lilywhites.

Skipp reacted quickly to Enzo Fernandez’s clearance after Emerson Royal’s shot had been saved and hit a powerful half-volley from just outside the box which had too much power for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kane, who scored the home side’s second goal on 82 minutes to seal the win, told BBC Sport after the game: “Chelsea have been a difficult opponent for us over the last few years. So it’s a really important win to keep us around fourth. 

“Overall I thought we deserved the win. It was an unbelievable goal (by Skipp) and what a time to get your first. He has been working hard so it was nice to see that one fly in.”

That performance and the goal to cap it off will do Skipp’s confidence a world of good.

We really needed the 22-year-old to step up in the absence of Bentancur and Bissouma and the way he has delivered has provided a major shot in the arm for our hopes of finishing in the top four and potentially trying to win a trophy.
