According to a piece by Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur’s Oliver Skipp was open to leaving the club in the January transfer window on a short-term loan deal.
Skipp was the hero of the hour in yesterday’s 2-0 win over London rivals Chelsea, scoring his first-ever goal for the club.
A fine strike from the midfielder shortly after halftime got the ball rolling for Spurs and sparked huge celebrations among the players and fans.
That moment has been a long time coming for Skipp, who has now racked up 67 appearances for his boyhood club (Transfermarkt).
Skipp showed great promise in his early career, and returned from an impressive loan spell with Norwich with the expectation that he would push on and become a first-team regular at Tottenham. Unfortunately, injury problems hampered his development over the last 18 months.
The goal yesterday may never have come, had Skipp ended up leaving the club in the recent January transfer window.
In the latest from Football.London, it is suggested that Skipp was open to moving on loan last month, but Conte wanted to keep him.
Now, with the injuries to both Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur, that decision looks like a very good one from the boss.
On the situation in central midfield, Skipp said: “Obviously we’ve had a couple of really serious injuries and I hope they’re back as soon as possible, but it was only really up to me, Pape and Hojbjerg.
“There’s only three fit central midfielders to step up and I feel that now I’ve had a run in the team, I really feel comfortable and able to put in performances like that and hopefully there’s more to come.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Oliver Skipp is such a hard-working young player and someone we absolutely have to nurture and keep hold of.
He has proved of late just how much of a special player he could be for us if we use him correctly, and he should be a huge part of the club’s future.
