Alan Shearer has told Harry Kane that what he has achieved at Tottenham counts for a lot more than winning trophies since he has a special place in the club’s history books.

Kane became Spurs’ highest goal scorer of all time recently by overtaking the legendary Jimmy Greaves’ record that has stood for more than half a century.

The 29-year-old is certainly on course to being remembered as the greatest player in the club’s history, if he is not considered so already.

However, question marks remain over Kane’s future at his boyhood club, with the striker’s current contract having 16 months left to run, and with Manchester United and Bayern Munich circling (The Telegraph).

Some pundits have urged Kane to leave Tottenham in the summer in order to win some medals (Daily Mail) but Shearer has now insisted that he would not change the fact that he stuck with Newcastle United even though he did not lift silverware during his time at St James’ Park.

The pundit told The Athletic: “I have the same discussion about Harry Kane now. No, his Spurs side haven’t delivered silverware and yes, I’m sure that burns, but what he has done and got is beyond any price, a lasting place in the club’s pantheon.

“Would he change that? I doubt it. Would I? Hell, no. But what would I give to be wheeling away from this goal towards the corner, right arm held skyward with a million volts powering my body, just one more time?

“It makes me sound like an old fart, but I’ve said this to Harry and to Erling Haaland; enjoy it and find some way of clutching that enjoyment, because nothing else in life comes close.

“Once you leave the pitch for the final time, it’s like something switches from technicolour to monochrome. Not that there’s anything wrong with black and white, obviously.”

Kane will undoubtedly want to win some trophies before he hangs up his boots but many of his achievements have already surpassed that of winning silverware.

There are hundreds of players across Tottenham’s history who have won medals at the club but there is only one who is the club’s all-time top scorer.
