Journalist Paul Brown has praised Emerson Royal for his upturn in form but insisted that the Brazilian will never become a fan favourite among the Tottenham faithful.

Emerson’s turnaround mirrors that of Moussa Sissoko’s a few years ago, with the right-back seemingly being written off as not being good enough by large sections of the fan base until a couple of months ago.

In fact, many would have felt ahead of the January transfer window that he was the most likely player to leave among the three right wing-backs at Spurs.

However, Antonio Conte decided to hang on to the 23-year-old over both Djed Spence and Matt Doherty, and the decision has turned out to be inspired one.

Emerson has hardly put a foot wrong in his last three Premier League starts against Manchester City, West Ham United and Chelsea, with the former Real Betis man keeping big-money signing Pedro Porro out of the starting eleven.

Brown suggested that the goal against the Hammers might be the moment to change Emerson’s fortunes at Spurs, but the journalist opined that the right-back is unlikely to win all the fans over.

He told GiveMeSport: “What a big goal he (Emerson) scored (against West Ham). They were really struggling in that game against West Ham until he managed to score.

“He still has moments when he doesn’t look like a Premier League player at all and did so in that game, but he seems to have found a new lease of life.

“I can’t see Emerson Royal ever becoming a huge fan favourite at Tottenham.

“But I think there probably is a little bit of grudging respect for him, in the sense that he’s managed to ride out this rough patch to get back in the team and perform when needed.”

There were question marks over whether Emerson offers enough of a threat in the final third to play as a wing-back and some of those questions have still not been completely answered.

However, to suggest that he did not look like a Premier League player is quite ridiculous. He is clearly a fantastic right-back in a back four as his one vs one defending has always been excellent.
