David Raya has seemingly opened the door for a summer exit from Brentford by admitting that he wants to play in European competitions.
Raya has developed impressively since first joining Brentford back in 2019 with the goalkeeper being one of the most consistent shot-stoppers in the Premier League since the Bees’ promotion to the top flight and even winning two caps for Spain last year.
There is uncertainty over the 27-year-old’s future, with his current contract at the Brentford Community Stadium having just 16 months left to run (Transfermarkt).
Reports over recent months have indicated that the Spaniard fits the profile of goalkeeper that Spurs are looking for to take over the gloves from Hugo Lloris in the summer (Daily Mail).
The same information was provided by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold last week, with the journalist stating that Raya is one of four goalkeepers on Tottenham’s shortlist, alongside Giorgi Mamardashvili, Robert Sanchez and Mike Maignan.
The Brentford number one has now revealed that he has turned down two contract offers from Thomas Frank’s men and admitted that he wants to play at the highest level.
Raya told The Athletic: “I turned down two contracts, one last year and one this January. They weren’t the offers we were looking for. I can only say that.
“I want to focus on playing games and not think too much about my future. I have a contract here, so I’m willing to finish that, but you never know what’s going to happen in the summer.
“Maybe the club wants to sell, maybe not. Maybe I want to stay. I want to focus on football and see what happens.
“The club will decide the price and if a club wants to pay money, that will be it. I’m not worried about that. I’m not in charge of that.
“I have big ambitions. I want to play in Europe and I want to fight to win a title. I want to fight to win a European title. I trust myself to be able to play in those types of games.”

The fact that Raya will have just 12 months left on his contract in the summer will make him a cost-effective option compared to some of the other goalkeepers alleged to be on Tottenham’s wishlist.
The 27-year-old’s Premier League experience could also factor favourably with Spurs in their decision.
