In his latest press conference appearance, Tottenham Hotspur’s assistant manager Cristian Stellini has hinted Antonio Conte will be back at the club within the next week, pending the approval of doctors.
Conte underwent surgery at the start of February to remove his gallbladder, after abdominal pains led to a diagnosis of cholecystitis. The Italian returned to the dugout for the defeats at Leicester City and AC Milan, before deciding he needed more time to recover.
He has since been resting in his homeland, while Spurs number two Stellini oversees first team action. It has been a successful spell as caretaker for Stellini, too, with a 100% record as the stand-in Spurs boss still intact.
Stellini was in charge for the win over Manchester City at the start of this month, before returning to managerial duties for the recent wins over London rivals West Ham and Chelsea.
The 48-year-old is set to be in the dugout once more for the FA Cup fifth roubd tie at Sheffield United tomorrow night.
How much longer he remains in charge is unknown at this stage, but Stellini himself has suggested Conte will be back at the club in the very near future.
Speaking to Football.London he said: “I think this week he will be back. He’s not in charge for this game but our doctor decide the right moment.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s a tricky one this really, because we are on a bit of a roll at the moment and you almost don’t want to upset the apple cart when we’re winning games. But, having Conte back is obviously a positive and it’s not like Stellini has been masterminding these wins without the input of the Spurs boss anyway.
Hopefully, Conte doesn’t rush back this time like he did at the start of the month. But if he’s ready, and the doctors are happy, then it will be a huge lift to have him back on the sidelines.
