Ben Jacobs has now suggested in his GiveMeSport column that some senior figures at Tottenham Hotspur do not want the club to reappoint Mauricio Pochettino if Antonio Conte departs at the end of the season.
Conte’s current contract with Spurs runs out in the summer (Transfermarkt) and it has been suggested over recent months that the 53-year-old could return to Italy in the summer to be closer to his family (Martin Lipton on Off The Ball).
Jacobs has now explained to GiveMeSport that Conte is not likely to walk away from Spurs at the moment, given that the Lilywhites are still competing in the Champions League and for the Premier League top four.
However, he added that a change is ‘feasible’ at the end of the current season, which could pave the way for Pochettino to complete a fairytale return to Tottenham.
The journalist states that the Argentine remains of interest to Daniel Levy but some others at the club do not share the same enthusiasm as the Spurs chairman.
Jacobs says that some senior figures at N17 feel that it may be ‘unwise’ to step back to such a set-up.
He also explains that other managers apart from Pochettino have their eye on Tottenham’s current situation and the club would thus not be short of options if they part ways with Conte.

Even putting emotions aside, one can argue that Pochettino is simply the best person for the job if Conte decides to leave at the end of the season.
There is the added advantage of the Argentine knowing plenty of players in the squad, and he could perhaps even be willing to give the likes of Ndombele, Lo Celso and Winks a lifeline.
