Antonio Conte has been speaking to the press this afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s crucial Champions League round of sixteen second leg tie with AC Milan, and has admitted he tried to return to the club sooner but doctors would not let him.
Conte has been out of action for the past month after being diagnosed with cholecystitis and having surgery to remove his gallbladder at the start of February. Despite coming back for the defeat at Leicester and the reverse fixture of the AC Milan game, Conte remained Italy for further recovery.
Since then, assistant manager Cristian Stellini has been overseeing the Spurs first team, carrying out training and managing games under the instructions of Conte from his home in Italy. In that time, Stellini achieved wins over West Ham and Chelsea, but also lost to Sheffield United in the FA Cup last week.
Spurs also suffered defeat at the weekend against Wolves on Saturday. Conte is now back at the club and preparing for the big game against AC Milan tomorrow, but he has told the press today that he did attempt to return sooner only to be warned against this by doctors.
He told Dan Kilpatrick: “I wanted to come back after the game against Sheffield United but the doctors stopped me, said you have to listen to us and wait two days more and come back to London on Sunday for the game against Milan. But honestly, I wanted to come back early.”

It’s best to listen to the doctors in situations like this and I think that Conte rushing back for the Wolves game would not have helped the matter.
At least now he has a few days under his belt with the squad to prepare for the game against Milan and hopefully, his return can be just the boost we all need for tomorrow.
